The Moroccan Mound cactus is a spiny, clump-forming succulent that’s actually not a true cactus—it’s a euphorbia, most commonly Euphorbia resinifera. It’s native to Morocco, especially the Atlas Mountains, and is well-loved in desert and drought-tolerant landscaping.
Appearance:
- Growth form: Forms dense, rounded mounds made up of dozens to hundreds of upright, 4-angled stems. A mature clump can spread several feet wide.
- Stems: Blue-green to grey-green, (4–12 in) tall, with prominent ridges.
- Spines: Short, paired spines (about 0.5–1 cm long) grow along the edges of each stem ridge.
- Flowers: Small, yellow cyathia (euphorbia’s unique flower structures) appear at the stem tips, usually in late winter or spring.
- Latex: Like other euphorbias, the plant contains a white, milky sap that is toxic and can cause skin and eye irritation.
Habitat & Care
- Light: Full sun to light shade; thrives in hot, dry climates.
- Soil: Very well-draining, sandy or gravelly.
- Water: Low water needs; drought-tolerant once established.
- Hardiness: Can tolerate light frost but prefers warmer temperatures.
Special Notes
- Sometimes confused with cacti because of its spiny stems, but it’s part of the Euphorbiaceae family
- The sap (resiniferatoxin) is extremely pungent and has been studied for its potent pain-sensitizing properties—definitely not a plant to handle without gloves.
